Comberton Judo Club

Cambridge, Great Britain

Comberton judo club was founded in 1985 and had a short closure in 1998/99. The clubs head coach is now Darren Challis, who is a British Judo Association registered level 3 coach and was the assistant coach to Team England during the 2002 Commonwealth games. There are three other coaches at the club. A committee of parents administer the club. The club has many players who come along just for fun and some that compete at a regional level; only players who want to compete and are suitable for competitions will be selected and older/more-experienced players will get a yearly competition plan.

Club sessions are held in the new leisure facility, cb3, at Comberton Village College. The sessions are outlined below. Additionally to these sessions there maybe the odd weekend training session at the club and area squad training for those who wish to participate. We also run lessons in curriculum time for the village college and an after school club. The table below outlines the clubs class, the ages are just a guideline as the class a child attends is based on their development age rather than their chronological age.

Wednesday      5-630pm         FUNdamentals     7-10years old

Thursday          630-745pm     Learn-to-Train     10-14years old

                         8-930pm         Train-toTrain         14years +

This pattern of lessons is similar to that laid down by the BJA for Long Term Athlete Development and is adapted from Balyi (2002). For more information contact our coach or click the link..

Comberton Judo Club was awarded £5000 in April 2006 from Awards for All to purchase new mats. The club now has a 10 x 10 metre mat area that utilises   the new regulation contest area.

In May 2007 Comberton Judo Club was awarded the bronze clubmark awarded, this award demonstrates to parents, schools and organizations that the club is run in a safe and efficient manner.
